5 Reasons Golfers Play in a Golf Tournament

Planning golf tournaments can be stressful. Securing players for your event can add even more stress and frustration throughout the planning process. In-order to have a successful golf tournament, it is best to have a full playing field which is 36 foursomes or 144 players.

As a Golf Event Planner with over 10 years experience planning golf tournaments, I can relate to your frustration. I too struggled to find players for my golf tournaments when I first started out. However, over the past 10 years of planning tournaments, I've learned the psychology behind why golfers sign-up to play in tournaments.

Here are 5 reasons why golfers choose to play in a tournament:

  1. A Friend Ask Them. I love to hang out with my friends when scheduled. I'm more likely to attend or participate in an event because they asked, as it is with most friends. So, give your players an incentive if they ask a friend to play in the tournament and they sign-up. Now you've created a win-win situation for you the planner, and the player. Your incentives can be free raffle tickets, mulligans or such.
  2. It's A Great Golf Course. In my Event Planning Masterclass (EPM) for Golf Tournaments, I teach you how to select your golf course as this is an important aspect of your golf tournament planning. The golf course you choose can make or break your tournament. As a rule to thumb, most golfers will choose to play if the golf course is where they wouldn't normally have a chance to play (like a members only club). Also, if the course is lovely to play on and is not too difficult then you will have players interested in wanting to play. The key is to choose a course that players will have fun playing on.
  3. Great Player's Gift (Goodie Bag). Yaas! I love gifts, how about you? As an event planner I get invited to trendy events on a regular basis.  I love to attend these events and get the FREE swanky goody bags that they give away. It's the same for golfers, they love NICE gifts in their goody bags. If your tournament is known for giving nice, useful gifts that golfers LOVE then they will sign-up for the event.
  4. A Good Cause. If your golf tournament is for charity, and your mission and vision resonates with the golfers in your community, then they will sign-up to play. The key is to get your mission and vision out there in a clear concise way.
  5. A Good Value. Deciding what to charge a golfer to participate in your golf tournament can be tricky, especially if you are fundraising. It is imperative that you're able to at least cover all your expenses with what you charge for your players fee. Remember to strike a balance between where the event is being held and how much you're charging.

Keeping these 5 elements in mind throughout your whole golf tournament planning process, will help you to gain more players for your next golf tournament!
